Modal Melodies – “Occupants”

Avatar

Two Aussie constants around the halls of RSTB link up for a collaborative album that pushes both of their styles into new directions. Jake Robertson (School Damage, Ausmuteants, Alien Nosejob) and Violetta Del Conte-Race (Primo!, The Shifters) have banded together for a studio-only slice of synth pop that’s marked by unwavering calm. The first single, “Occupants” slinks out of the speakers — a slicked back hard stare framed in smoke ring coils. Del Conte-Race takes the vocal duties, a sightly aloof, iced delivery that pairs well with the throbbing synth-pop grooves that snake beneath her. The pair have both touched on more brittle forms of post-punk in their respective circles, but this finds both wading into a glossed neon glow that’s unfamiliar but potent. The new record is out May 13th From Anti-Fade.
