Milkweed – “Folklore 1979”

I mentioned the great new tape from Milkweed a while back and the band has now let the full run out into the world along with an accompanying video from Greg Butler and Oh Kestrel Films. The tape, like their previous works, takes all of its lyrical text from an existing printed work. In this case the band has chosen Folklore Volume 90 1979 ii. The periodical FOLKLORE is the journal of The Folklore Society, founded in 1878. The band cuts and pastes themes from the book, turning the tome’s wooded vistas into a tapestry of psychedelic folk. While it’s broken into pieces ranging from 0:35 to almost 3:00, the album works best as one long, intertwined piece. Butler’s film adds to the feeling, lacing Milweed’s works over a film that’s dark and delirious, a fevered vision fed into the spools, chewed and corroded by time into lost rituals. The album is out now from Broadside Hacks.
