Milkweed – “Exile of the Sons of Uisliu”

The undying experiment of Milkweed returns, this time expanded to a full length and using a far larger source material than pamphlets, journals, and myths. The band feeds 400 pages of Thomas Kinsella’s translation of the Táin Bó Cúailnge, into the forge and works their alchemy into dazed incantations that feel like they live somewhere between The Caretaker’s treatises on memory and half-whispered folktales passed ‘round the open flame. Their fractured folk remains broken and battered, bolstered by dust covered beats and the hypnotic recitation of screeds that seem mechanical yet metaphysical. Brittle and barbed, the band feeds history through the paper shredder like Burroughs on Boards of Canada. It’s the culmination of the outfit’s experiments and an ambitious journey come to fruition. The new album, Remscéla, is out May 2nd from Broadside Hacks.
