Magic Tuber Stringband – “Dogwood”

RSTB faves Magic Tuber Stringband return today, headlining “a compilation of songs by artists from the Southeast in protest of the proposed Cop City development in the Weelaunee Forest, DeKalb County, GA and the state-sanctioned violence waged against forest defenders.” The compilation, You Better Mind: Southeastern Songs to Stop Cop City, brings together quite a few familiar names, including Joseph Allred, Nathan Bowles, Sally Anne Morgan, Sluice, Shane Parish and many more. For their entry Evan and Courtney deliver a tender track, “Dogwood” that’s wrapped in a down blanket woven of regret and reconciliation. As much as I love MTS’ winding instrumentals, I must confess that their vocal compositions always come with a comforting warmth that raises them to the top of my repeat plays from their catalog (see: “Angel of Death”). It’s a lovely compilation of experimental folk wound tight with a natural bond — a good collection for a good cause.
