Magic Tuber String Band – “Angel of Death”
If you missed When Sorrows Encompass Me ‘Round from Magic Tuber String Band, which snuck out earlier in the year on Feeding Tube, it’s one of the year’s overlooked gems and I’d recommend getting it queued up as soon as possible. The Durham, NC duo create a sort of bluegrass magic together, filling up the room to sound like much more than a two-piece, with their plaintive guitar and fiddle. A new tape on the way from Garden Portal offers up a touch of the quiet, yearning beauty of their last, and the first peak into its contents, “Angel of Death,” embraces the calm moments in the genre, rather than the barn dance high of more exuberant strains. The somber saunter of the tune embraces the old time Appalachian fixation on death and redemption. The delivery feels both like a spiritual, looking back in remembrance, and late night lullaby, sending out a soft warning of the specter of death around every corner. The new cassette is out October 15th from Garden Portal.
