Horsegirl – “2468”

Really digging this one today. I came a bit late to Horsegirl’s lauded debut and I don’t think I ever really got time to let it leave a proper mark, but new single “2468” finds the band stripping away much of the guitar growl that permeated that debut. With Cate Le Bon in the producer’s chair, the new album looks like it’s shifting in a more minimal direction and the evolution sounds good on ‘em. Chucking the squall of amps for a bedrock of discordant violin and loping bass, the new single leans into the post-punk crevices created by The Raincoats and Kleenex, turning it’s sing-song chorus into a vision of VU covering The Dixie Cups. The trio pairs the new single with a playful video that leans into the playground chant appeal of the lyrics. The new album, Phonetics On and On, is out February 14th from Matador.
