Hearts & Minds – “Particle Field”

Astral Spirits announces a new release from Hearts & Minds, the trio of bass clarinetist Jason Stein, keyboardist Paul Giallorenzo, and drummer Chad Taylor. The trio immediately grasps on to groove with Giallorenzo’s keys pulsing hypnotically and Taylor’s always heady rhythms pushing the pace. Atop the torrent, Stein’s runs push through dissonance and desire, scorching the speakers with the kind of stabs often relegated to the sax, but given a depth of sound on the bass clarinet. There’s always something searing from the crew at Spirits and “Particle Field” harnesses the kind of kinetic rush that I’ve long expected from the label. The trio’’s new album, Illuminescence, is out January 13th.
