Gregory Uhlmann, Josh Johnson, Sam Wilkes – “Frica”

The debut from SML was high on my list of favorites from last year, a record that ripped jazz up at the seams and reconstructed it in new ways. Featuring many of the players from Jeff Parker’s IVtet, the band was stacked with talent from the fertile West Coast scene. Two of the members of SML return this year with a new album that further explores the progressive leylines of jazz. With the addition of bassist Sam Wilkes, the new trio finds guitarist Gregory Uhlmann and saxophonist Josh Johnson lacquering hypnotic whirlpools of motion to a bedrock of rhythm that’s as supple as anything that their contemporaries at the ETA are handing out. The new album, Uhlmann Johnson Wilkes, is out March 14th from International Anthem.
