Grace Cummings – “Storm Queen”

Aussie songwriter Grace Cummings is heading into her sophomore LP with a stellar run of singles and as of yesterday the album’s title track has landed with a dark and dramatic video accompanying its gorgeous growl. The themes on Storm Queen seem to stem from a more coiled countenance than its predecessor. Where Refuge Cove was battered by the force of Grace’s songs — torn and tattered in the storm that swirled her world, the follow-up finds her not only weathering that tempest but taming it. Guarded but venomous, she sings over tender strums until the poison tongue of sax begins to work its way around the song. Cummings’ rusted rasp is as sharp as ever tempered with moments that find her polishing its points. The anticipation remains high for the full length when it hits in January, out on the 14th for ATO.
