Glenn Jones – “Ruthie’s Farewell”

Avatar

Spoke about Glenn in passing yesterday, but I’ve been remiss to cover this new album he has on the way from Thrill Jockey. The second song that’s slipped out from the record is the sweet, bluegrass-tinged “Ruthie’s Farewell.” The song is an ode to a longtime friend of Jones’, fiddler Ruthie Dornfeld, who’d moved away some years prior and due to not being able to take it with her, gifted Glenn his first banjo. The banjo gets some good use on the track, sparring with Ruthie’s fiddle in a track that dances solemnly around the speakers. It’s a song of goodbyes, heavy with longing, but slightly hopeful for a quick return. The song appears on Glenn’s upcoming Vade Mecum, which is out June 24th.
