Eje Eje – “Saved From The Jazz (Spring)”
It’s always good to check in on what Batov records is up to. The label casts a wide net, picking up gems like Wax Machine, though they primarily hit on a mixture of Middle Eastern jazz, folk, and funk. That axis hits right at the core of Eje Eje. The solo project of Itamar Kluger, known primarily for his work with Turkish psych-folk band the Şatellites, Eje Eje explores a more rhythmic side to Kluger’s work. The first single from his debut, Five Seasons, injects a strain of funk and psych that sounds like it wouldn’t be out of place somewhere in the Finders Keepers or Pharaway Sounds catalog among Turkish reissues. The album explores the Eastern concept of five seasons, including ‘end of summer’ which is, Kluger notes, “characterized by the elemental earth, the time of year when fruit fall and rot beneath the trees.” “Saved From The Jazz” represents the Spring portion of the album, percolating on vibrant rhythms and a heavy ripple of bass. The new album explores the full calendar of seasons July 28th from Batov.
