A new single from Berlin based, Turkish singer and multi-instrumentalist Derya Yıldırım heralds her band Grup Şimşek’s new album in November. With shades of Selda’s ‘70s work and fellow Anatolian rock updaters Altin Gün, the band adds a bit of a disco pulse to this one, infecting their psychedelic folk with a snaking dance that emanates off of the polyrhythmic percussion and slicked funk guitars. No matter the trappings, though, the focus remains on Derya’s hypnotic vocals. Her voice drapes over the track like steam, moving just as freely through the air in acrobatic twits and turns that seem to defy time and space. The new album, Dost 2, a companion piece to last year’s Dost 1, is out November 16th from Les Disques Bongo Joe.
