Channelers – “Serpent In The Sky”

Avatar

So many good releases coming via Inner Islands lately. After the announcement of the Golden Brown tape, the label’s Sean Conrad (Ashan, Skyminds) lets us into the world of his latest as Channelers. The band has quite often seen Conrad immersed in an ambient wash of drones, but here he’s focused on acoustic guitar, with some of the same hushed coloration and a blanket of tape hiss wrapped around it as well. Conrad looked to English folk from the ‘60s as inspiration, ingesting the accentuated styles of Jansch, Renbourn, Hardin, and Chapman and channeling them into the album’s calm, yet ashen aura. “Serpent In The Sky” lopes over a rising sun of vibrational energy, climbing through the mists with a fierce determination in its belly. The new record is a new chapter for Channelers, in line with the shimmering resolve of the rest of his catalog, but also placing Conrad among a new class of folk instrumentalists that mine the particular alchemical turbulence of the English Isles to great effect. Another Entrance is out October 22nd.
