Ava Mendoza – “Pink River Dolphins”

The last few years have seen excellent collaborations from Ava Mendoza, releasing music with Mendoza Hoff Revels, William Parker, Dave Sewelson, and Bill Orcutt, but for her latest Ava’s solo and wrestling with her past. A new album finds the songwriter searching through formative experiences and personal history, set to her signature knotted riffs. The first single, “Pink River Dolphins” wraps her angular guitar contortions and brittle blues around an elegy for lost friend Jaimie Branch. Without the sparring of her collaborators, Mendoza’s solo work highlights the contortions of her guitar and crush jazz and blues into a sound that’s wounded and yet cathartic. The new record, The Circular Train, is out November 15th from Orcutt’s Palilalia Records.
