Ava Mendoza/Gabby Fluke-Mogul/Carolina Pérez – “Amazing Graces”

I’ve been slack on this one, but it’s a busy month and it’s never too late for something serrated from Ava Mendoza. The RSTB fave, consummate collaborator, and Bill Orcutt Guitar Quartet standout is back with a new trio, that brings her together with Gabby Fluke-Mogul on violin and Carolina Pérez on drums. The trio tears through the walls of consciousness on album highlight “Amazing Graces.” Mendoza and Pérez spar sticks and riffs with a heaviness that takes this from the avant gravel pits towards something more metal, which would be in line with Pérez’ background. But, with Fluke-Mogul’s violin wrapping barbed wire winds around their work, the song is bent and contorted towards something more angular. Bathed in battery acid, the song is just a taste of the trio’s debut album, Mama Killa, out July 11th from Burning Ambulance.
