Mythical Motors

Seems like Guided by Voices comparisons always come hand in hand with a veneer of tape dust in tow. Short, punchy songwriters get put on the Pollard list, but only if they adhere to the rules of the early years and a collective nostalgia for the critically-cradled definitive sound of the band. With a prolific heart and a prowess under three minutes, Mythical Motors is just as much heir apparent to the GBV tag as Sharp Pins or Good Flying Birds without feeling the need to hook hiss into the mix. Addison locks into the a more recent balance between polish and punctured pop, swapping swoons for power pop’s underdogs from speaker to speaker. Guided by Game Theory, crushed on The dBs and Permanent Green Light, the new record crimps together a mixtape of prime-era Left Dial delicacies that prove you should have been paying more attention to Chattanooga these past few years.

One look through Matt Addison’s discography and it’s clear he’s got the grind to go the distance, amassing an impressive collection of CDs, cassettes, and digital singles over the last couple of decades. With his first LP on deck, the songwriter arcs into a new era and some of his best songwriting yet. Tremolo On The Punchline swerves through seventeen ruminations on heartache, hubris, and hope. Tossed into the air like dandelion seeds and swept up in delirium and dream, the new album’s a cabinet of pop curios that I’ve been eager to revisit time and time again. A listener could spend days combing back through the Motors’ back catalog (and you should), but Tremolo On The Punchline proves that the best days are also ahead. A glowing gem for 2026 that straddles the sutures between power pop, indie pop, and jangle pop, enamored with all, beholden to none.
