Zonk – “B”

Been meaning to write this one up since it hit the speakers and, honestly, there’s nothing better to get your week started that a bit of Zonk! The New Mexico duo, guitarist Paul DeHaven and drummer Robin Chestnut, pound through five free rock rippers with the sonics set to singe. The pieces here waver from a few minutes to longform freakouts, each finding DeHaven’s muscular riffs sparring with Chestnut’s 60 pound pummel. Where some of the cuts here are built to quicken the pulse from the moment they crack, mid-point mind melt “B” finds the band exploring some gauzed textures, tossing the listener through the surf before letting them loose into the oncoming gale and gravel of the second half. The band’s eponymous new album is out now from RSTB faves Island House.
