Winged Wheel – “Sleeptraining”

A new one from site favorites Winged Wheel is on the way and its a gauzy delight. Get yer headphones on for this one as the band expands their sound and their roster. Adding to the original lineup of Cory Plump (Spray Paint, Rider/Horse), Fred Thomas (Tyvek, Idle Ray), Whitney Johnson (Matchess, Damiana), and Matthew J Rolin (Powers/Rolin Duo) the band adds in Lonnie Slack (Water Damage) and Steve Shelley (Sonic Youth) for the upcoming Big Hotel. The first single out of the gate is the propulsive pounce of “Sleeptraining.” The song slips through the whirlpool, a flurry of energy and motion that threatens to consume Johnson’s vocals. This time around the band’s drum-heavy approach pushes them towards Neu! territory, pounding and pulsing as the guitars scratch at the listener. The band’s debut was a taut, tensile favorite around here, but as the group embraces the maelstrom, this is shaping up to be one to watch out for in 2024. Get this on the top of your listening list.
