Whitney Johnson – “Dafni”

Whitney Johnson’s had a busy year already. Following a new record with RSTB faves Winged Wheel, Johnson is prepping two records for release on Drag City — one under her Matchess moniker and another under her own name. Both records explore gauzy sound worlds, but where her work under Matchess blocks out the sun, there’s a lightness to her solo work. On “Dafni” she lets synth pulse underneath the track, boiling over into a kosmiche tangle of tones by the song’s end. Hav, her new solo outing, is an exploration of the human body as an instrument of sensory awareness, but one that becomes flawed over time, changing our perceptions through its limitations. Both Hav and its companion piece Stena are out September 27th from Drag City.
