West of Roan – “The Bell”

A sunrise mediation eases over the horizon today from West Of Roan. The new album from Annie Schermer and Channing Showalter, both members of enigmatic folk collective Doran, finds the pair digging into a plaintive folk tradition that brings to mind the Appalachian lean of The Black Twig Pickers, Joseph Allred, or House and Land. Album opener, “The Bell,” contemplates ancient gods and ancestral wounds, creaking into view on harmonium and fiddle. It’s a song that calls for healing in a world that’s become scarred and scorched. Like an ancient prayer, the pair implore their chosen totem for healing, or at the very least, an audience to plead their case. It’s a perfect start to the upcoming Queen of Eyes, the band’s first outing for Spinster Records. The new album arrives July 12th.
