Tobacco City – “Autumn”
I’m very excited to see a new record on the way from RSTB faves Tobacco City this morning. As much as modern mainstream country would like paint itself as a true portrait of the American expanse, Tobacco City has always had a way with conjuring up a more accurate picture. Between albums the band let out the excellent single “America,” a small town portrait that gets a sort of sequel here. Real small town shit is a song about ditch weed and inhalants, industrialization’s terrible symbiosis, and a feeling of being forever trapped. “Autumn” captures Midwest youth and the anguish and ache of days spent trying to turn away through any method available. Wrapped up in the dazed glow of Cosmic Country, aloft on slides from Andy “Red” PK, the song breaks the heart gently. The band’s new album also brings around a few other familiar names, Matthew Rolin and Jen Powers (Powers/Rolin Duo), Eliza Weber (Glyders), Jim Becker (Califone) among others. Horses is out March 7th from Scissor Tail.
