Swimming Bell

Following on last year’s excellent Charlie LP, Katie Schottland returns with a new EP as Swimming Bell. Fresh off of a collaboration with Joe Harvey-Whyte and Bobby Lee (who also have an LP out today) the songwriter conjures a five song EP that extends her dream-drunk Cosmic American vision. On Somnia, Schottland evokes the aqueous tones of the cover, bringing humidity to the American West. The haze surrounds the songs, circling the underlying yearn from steel by Tyler English and Oli Deakin. The centerpiece, though, remains Katie’s haunting vocals. They whisper, coax, lament, and languish in the subjects on the EP. Within the short confines of the EP, Swimming Bell recaptures the heatwaves of her last LP, a welcome voice poking though the ether of the new wave of Americana.
