Smoke Bellow – “Pep Pep”
by Andy
It’s a big day for South-Hemi favorites around here and following The Bures Band and Jim Nothing, Aussie/Baltimore band Smoke Bellow offer up their new (and sadly final) album, Structurally Sound. The new record finds the band pushing further to blur the lines between post-punk and nascent disco’s delirium, chewing on ESG and Medium Medium’s elastic aesthetics and some Au Pairs austerity. “Pep Pep” wobbles atop a stuttered beat, feeling like it’s stuck between dance and tremor. Woozy, with a wicked smile, the song leads the listener through rhythmic shifts and rubbery riffs. I’m gonna miss ‘em, but this is a nice way to go out. The new album, Structurally Sound, is out October 11th from Moon Glyph.
