SBT – “The Gift”

Avatar

After a long sabbatical from releasing music, songwriter Sarabeth Tucek re-emerges this week with a new single under the banner of SBT. Paring with longtime producer Luther Russell (Those Pretty Wrongs), Tucek’s latest single is far removed from the spare folk and Americana that marked 2011’s Get Well Soon. “The Gift” is a propulsive, sweetly sublime arrangement that moves away from her roots in Dylan and Young towards a more complex pop sound with a sharp turn towards the tension of Bat For Lashes and PJ Harvey. The song spins the listener around with a tonal shift, letting on early with ‘60s strums and playful hues until just after the two-minute mark when the shutters clamp down and the song embraces a dark hunger. The vocals begin to swim around the headspace until they’re devoured by guitars, peaking in a moment of feedback and froth. The new single is out January 27th, with an album, Joan of All, on the way this Spring.
