Mixtape: The Summer Kind
This one’s been in the works for a while, a winter warmup to stave off the colder months. It really opened up with a flurry of new releases that weave between the summer fresh harmonies of ‘60s psych pop and the trickle-down tributaries of power pop and paisley pop. Throw in a few garage pop wonders and the collection is a perfect companion to Spring breezes that are beginning to bake towards warm. Plenty of familiar faces here, with The Lemon Twigs leading the way and Drugdealer coming in fast behind. The new names, though, bring some of the sweetest surprises, including a folk-coated number from Ground Cinnamon Band, lush layers from Beefheart & McQuinn, some snarl from The Gnomes, and a kickoff from the always sublime outfit The Mellons. Hope this one warms you up
