Magic Tuber Stringband – “Where The Place Becomes Forgetting”
The second single from the new Magic Tuber Stringband soothes some of the scratch from their first. The band digs into the fissures between folk and bluegrass traditions and the ecological realities of modern life in the South. “Where The Place Becomes Forgetting” finds the band at their most pastoral, pushed gently by the pluck of strings, perfumed by the curl and curdle of Courtney Werner’s fiddle. Soaked in strange earth and peat moss, the song catches natural charms in warm breezes, but as with the rest of the record its beauty is always at odds with something below the surface. The album is rooted in Werner’s work with the Savannah River Site, an ecosystem that bears the ecological scars of Capital left unchecked. The LP, Heavy Water, heads into the world on May 22nd from Thrill Jockey.
