Lucifécit – “Queque”

Got tipped to this one from Ben Chasney (Six Organs of Admittance) who’s been talking this one up lately. The Portuguese band takes some scintillating turns through modal jazz with spiritual undertones. Mixing throbbing bass with acrobatic horn improvisations, the record stings the listener and leaves a burn for days to come. Born in darkness, but radiating with a kind of bioluminescent glow, especially when those horns kick in, the band’s debut doesn’t land lightly. Album opener, “Queque” is probably the best showcase for the kind of punk growl that sneaks into Norberto Lobo’s bass lines, tangling the speakers in tone before the band kicks in with polyrhythms and brass blisters. The new album, Devoção, is out now from Facada Records.
