Ibelisse Guardia Ferragutti & Frank Rosaly “DESTEJER”
The first peek into the debut from Bolivian-born songwriter Ibelisse Guardia Ferragutti and drummer Frank Rosaly is steeped in rhythm, run through with a jazz ripple, and clouded with a mercurial air. “DESTEJER” chugs and chafes at its percussive patter, pitting Rosaly’s circular motion against Ibelisse’s sonorous vocals. It blooms through the dust, a quenching cut that springs to life and draws the listener out of the darkness. The track features a few familiar names, with Ben LaMar Gay adding cornet and Rob Frye (Bitchin Bajas) threading in flute. “DESTEJER” has an earthen shimmer to it — passages perched like jewels glinting in the darkness, drums bouncing around the headspace like echoes among cavern walls. The new album, MESTIZX, also features contributions from Bill MacKay, Matt Lux (Chicago Odense Ensemble), Mikel Patrick Avery (Natural Information Society), and Daniel Villarreal-Carrillo. It’s out May 3rd from International Anthem and Nonesuch.
