Good Flying Birds – “I Will Find”
More indie pop goodness on the dock today, this time running through a solid triple-fold comp from St. Louis’ Inscrutable Records. The tape brings together three bands that brighten up the more ramshackle corners of the indie spectrum. Split between the tape-hum hi-jinks of Chicago’s Answering Machine, the jangled gems of Indianapolis’ Good Flying Birds, and St. Louis own Soup Activists, the tape is scuffed but shining. Answering Machine anchor the comp as the scrappier arm of the tripod, with Soup Activists feeling a bit refined next to their corroded contemporaries, but the winner here for me is Good Flying Birds. The band captures just the right cross-section of charm and cheer that fed into The Pastels, Heavenly, and Brighter. The band not only offers up a trio of tunes here, but wanders across town to another St. Louis label, Rotten Apple, for a full length jangler, Talulah’s Tape. Both are worth a bit of time on the ears, and if you’re holding down the cassette ranks, a bit of time on the spools too.
