Giant Day

Continuing the celebration of Elephant 6’s enduring legacy, 2024 also saw the release of new outfit Giant Day’s debut Glass Narcissus. From the minds of Derek Almstead (Olivia Tremor Control / Circulatory System / Marshmallow Coast / ex-of Montreal) and Emily Growden (Marshmallow Coast), the album traces the lines from the collective’s living room orchestra origins through a larger pop sound. With a bit of a production assist by the dearly departed Will Cullen Hart, the album pushes the label’s sound away from it’s psych-pop safety net and towards a more propulsive brand of indie pop.

The closest aesthetic connection to the collective feels like of Montreal, who counted Almstead in their ranks early on, with he and Barnes taking parallel paths towards their own more polished pop ends. The record ripples with a crimp of funk, burbles on rhythm, and splashes every corner of the soundstage with saturated vocals. The record feels widescreen, boundless, an all encompassing pop whirlwind that’s adhering Almstead’s multi-instrumental prowess to the palette of pop. It’s a start for Giant Day, but a testament to the E6 legacy that it’s still producing vibrant new tributaries.
