Bhajan Bhoy

Broadcast as a part of the celebration of the On The Wire radio program’s 40th anniversary, Bhoy On The Wire is a testament to the experimentation and sonic malleability that has become the core of Bhajan Bhoy over the years. Slung between dub, synthpop, psych, and noise, the set hurtles the listener deep into the well of Ajay Sagger’s sonic imagination. The works come on like acid dipped devotionals, cosmic hymns to faraway forces beyond this world. Clouds of synth swirl around the pieces, unfurling plumes of sound that bounce between bass and percussion in hypnotic waves. Flipping through the radio dial as it dives deeper, the release lets the listener journey far from the safety of their speakers.
“The Milkman” opens with a curiosity that’s immediately pushed under the rug by the time that “Campus Blues” collects its clouds. The rest of the record doesn’t settle in to sit still, slowly swerving sparse and airy on “Castle Bandstand” and blooming ethereal on “What Lurks Behind Those Illuminations.” Early standout “Pass The Sushi Pon The Lef’ Hand Side” slips the expectations of its dub title to drape itself in a Kosmiche burble, pulling the listener into the cradle of quasars and crystalline synth work. The album tumbles further towards the German Progressive pastures as it comes to a close, echoing A.R. & Machines on the cavernous guitar echoes that sew up the record. Sagger is never satiated with sound, always pushing further towards the edges of experimentation and this collection gives the listener a sweeping view of his world all in one place.
