April Magazine – Falling Window EP

A surprise EP surfaced this week from RSTB faves April Magazine. The Bay Area band sits in a soft-focus foam alongside fellow obfuscation-pop faves Cindy, Tony Jay, and Flowertown. The new EP does little to dissipate the fog that surrounds the band’s works, layering a welcome veneer of smoke and haze around the band’s unhurried pop strums. Peeking through the clouds are still some hooks, though. The band welcomes the listener into their cocoon of comfort, propelled by the hypnotic click of drum machine patter, pillowy strums, and delicately layered vocals. On Falling Window, the band perfects their potion, sauntering between songs that barely register lyrics (“as you turn”) to pop hooks (“1000 goodbyes”) and even some string arrangement (“hollow stars”). The EP comes in a very limited run with a bonus zine of found photos or as the tape alone. Don’t sleep.
