Aluminum – “Behind My Mouth”

From the opening baggy beat that slips out of the speakers until the fuzz bass hits, there’s something immediate and intangible about San Francisco’s Aluminum. The band’s sound is familiar, but slippery. Try too hard to pin it down and it squirms from Happy Mondays/Soup Dragons body movers to a more toothsome strain of ‘90s nostalgia — feeling like it lobs the Madchester mindset right onto the couch at 120 Minutes. The song is low slung but seething, bringing the Salt n’ “Seether” guitar tones, while nodding towards a few more buried treasures of the era like Fur or Superette. The song immediately latches onto the listener, feeling like an old favorite whose name is always on the tip of the tongue, but forever out of reach. The group’s Ryann Gonsalves gives the song its dry ice detachment — a feeling that eschews aloof and lands in the arms of effortlessly cool. Gonsalves is having an excellent year already, with a solo record out on Dandy Boy and a new LP with Torey on Slumberland, but from the very first moments, Aluminum feels like their band to watch. The group also features members of Marbled Eye and Wild Moth, adding to the pedigree of Aluminum’s past and present. The new record, Fully Beat, is out May 24th from felte.
