Aaron Shaw – “Heart of a Phoenix”

A new video from the emotionally fraught, and ultimately triumphant album from West Coast multi-instrumentalist Aaron Shaw arrives today. Shaw, a collaborator of Anderson Paak, Herbie Hancock, Saul Williams and Carlos Niño, and a student of Kamasi Washington, crafted his new album And So It Is in the shadow of his diagnosis of bone marrow failure. The diagnosis left him often short of breath, putting live and studio work in question during the run up to And So It Is. “Heart Of A Phoenix” embraces the core of the album, a return from the weight of his condition, a soaring soul-jazz odyssey that pushes slowly from its early simmer to the sear of its second half.

Shaw elaborates, “”One of the first songs I recorded. Heavy breaths , and severe tachycardia orbited my emotions as I didn’t know if these were my final moments with my band. In desperate need of a Transfusion but remaining on the mission because I cant let myself down. ‘Heart of a Phoenix’ more so marks my rebirth after overcoming. This song embodies the spirit of rising from the ashes, being resilient though the turbulence, and the transformative power of hope. I hope it inspires others to embrace their own journeys of renewal and to embrace the obstacles. We are stronger from the challenges.” Shaw’s new album is out now from Leaving Records.
