The Stones – Leaning on a Domino b/w (I’m a) Drama Queen
Sifting through opener slots still remains one of my favorite methods of music discovery. I’d missed out on last year’s single from new NYC outfit The Stones, but with some opening dates for The Lemon Twigs, the band’s latest has become a pretty heavy staple over the last week. It’s certainly a ballsy move to take on that name, but the NYC four-piece don’t seem fussed by the shadow cast by their more famous namesakes. The band blisters into a sneered and swaggered brand of glam-punk that leans into the bigger than life expectations draped on the name. The A-side ties some twang into knots, hip-checking power pop and setting the velvet stage for the vamping on the flip. The magic behind the boards comes courtesy of Ryan Howe, who just showed back up on the latest Josephine record as well. His production glazes this one just right and the band volleys an undeniable 1-2 tag of unshakable songs. The band joins The Twigs on a UK/Ireland leg this spring. Get the single spinning on the speakers and keep them marked as ones to watch.
