Setting – “Gum Bump”

A second single from the increasingly intriguing Setting finds the band trawling through swampy atmospheres. With a pulsating beat and a squelch of synth, the cut creeps among the dark entrails of sound. Half sci-fi soundtrack, half ‘70s mystery material, the song feels like it might be comfortable combing through the cutout footage of a John Carpenter film. Bursts of noise batter into greased grooves and the whole thing rattles around like a fever dream of funk and fusion. The band’s eponymous new album descends on the public April 24th from Thrill Jockey.
