Magasin – “Malentendido”

It’s a good time to get into Lewsberg side bands. If you missed out on the excellent debut from Arie van Vliet’s The Hobknobs last year, catch up with the new outfit from Michiel Klein. Like his bandmate van Vliet, Klein dips though the doors of post-punk, though, where The Hobknobs opt for softness, Magasin leaves the edges brittle and broken. With knods towards The Kleenex/Lilliput axis and a bit of Raincoats and Swell Maps tossed in for good measure, the band’s debut single doesn’t tread lightly. Blustering into view on a tangle of barbed guitars, “Malentendido” chafes atop wobbled bass until Lola Diaz Cantoni’s vocals come to soothe and scold in equal doses. The band pairs it with b-side “Re cuerdo” on a debut tape out March 6th.
