The Native Cats – “Tanned Rested and Dead”

Really great to hear a new one out of Tasmanian duo The Native Cats. The band, long a favorite around here, offers up a scathing, snaking new single that clocks in just under seven minutes. “Tanned Rested and Dead” is “about longing to win the affection of the United States, and about watching the United States slowly combust and float further and further away,” says vocalist Chloe Alison Escott. The song barrels out of the speakers with an insistence, with a pounding beat and Escott’s invective drawing blood before building to something more expansive. As the cut nears its conclusion the sparse post-punk slink peaks into a towering grace, with background vocals from members of fellow Tassie bands Slag Queens and Philomath. The song serves as centerpiece of the new album, The Way On Is The Way Off, out November 10th from Chapter Music.
