The Cosmic Tones Research Trio
Coming just a year after their sublime debut, the sophomore record from The Cosmic Tones Research Trio furthers the band’s meditative vision. A blend of spiritual jazz, modern composition, and sound bath serenity; the record wavers from hypnotic rhythms to still waters disturbed only by gentle piano and the sublime stringwork of Harlan Silverman. Quite a few are still keeping the cosmic jazz jets going, and the Trio fit firmly into the realm among the percolating urges of “Sankofa,” but, as with their debut, the band’s stillness is often just as evocative. “Sacred Garden” feels so delicate that even the breath of the listener might break the spell and “Photosynthesis” might feel just as at home on a Green-House album as it would here.
Like their last, the record slips seamlessly from its more rhythmic beginnings towards the heavenly harmonics as it unfolds. “Ba Hi Yah” begins the smolder, and then the album slips towards the kind of cosmic vibrations the befit the band’s handle. “Invocation” thrums with life, a sonic reset that eases the mind, tapping into that Laraaji vibrations before the album returns to the most minimal jazz moments on “Eternal Love,” a wistful goodbye to the listener that’s practically implying the sounds of sweeping up and locking doors on its way out. The band’s ability to turn quietude into quilted healing is unmatched these days and it’s great to feel their warmth once again in 2025.
