Orcutt Shelley Miller

The second record from a highly anticipated trio this week, though Orcutt Shelley Miller are far from the calm eddies that cut through Shrunken Elvis. The trio, comprised of psych/scorch luminaries Bill Orcutt (Harry Pussy), Steve Shelley (Sonic Youth, Winged Wheel), and Ethan Miller (Comets On Fire, Feral Ohms, Howlin’ Rain) play upon their strengths on this live debut. The band spent quite a few months lacquering the coasts last year and they caught their show at Zebulon on tape, surfacing now in Silver Current’s official bootleg capacity as the band’s debut proper. As might be expected of the three players, the set is heavy on the singe, hurtling the listing into the heart of the dying star right from the very first notes.

The opener sets the tone — Shelley’s tumbling, yet tight drums circling Miller on the bass, a serpent with sights set on rhythm, laying down a bedrock for Orcutt to lacerate with his electric itch. The record’s no bar blues standard, scraping at the senses and leaving the listener with blisters on all sides from it’s UV glow. Orcutt’s tangled tin riffs turn the record into something spectacular, an arc-welded wonder that sparks and slices at unimaginable angles. It’s hard to walk away from the set without at least some form of dent or ding to the psyche, but the brain rankling is more than worth the price of admission. For those that saw them light this match on stage, its a warm reminder, and for those left out of the coastal runs, it’s a great way to catch up to the trio’s tempest.
