Matt Kivel – “Tidal Wave”
An ambitious new solo album rises over the horizon from Matt Kivel (Princeton, Wine Country). The songwriter and Woodsist alum has been quietly crafting solo works for over a decade and his latest aims to encompass all corners of his life on the West Coast. A record rooted in family, frustrations, dashed dreams, renewed ambitions, all set amid the hills and heat of Los Angeles. First single, “Tidal Wave,” crashes in slow, despite its calamitous title. The song settles into familial connections and strained emotions over the gentle lope of piano, Kivel’s voice rings in the ears, a gentle urging among tense strings and tender notions. The new album was the work of 7 years of writing, removing, collaboration, and transformation. It features a few notable friends including Jana Horn, Adam Brisbin, and Matt Johnson (Jeff Buckley, St Vincent). The new record, Escape From L.A. is out December 12th from Scissor Tail.
