Fazed On A Pony – “Heart Goes Blank”

I don’t often turn to Meritorio or New Zealand’s great Melted Ice Cream for indie country, but that’s just what’s coming down the net from both labels this week. The labels team up for the release of the a new album from Kiwi songwriter Peter McCall, better known as Fazed On A Pony. Despite the mouthful of a moniker, the first single is stripped back, tangled up in easy strums and the soft glow of slide and steel. There’s an ache to “Heart Goes Blank,” the kind of beaten, but buoyant songs that bring to mind Jason Molina, in and out of Magnolia, or the Palace revisited phase of Will Oldham. Fiddle plays through the strums, hand in hand with McCall’s pleas to let go. The new single sits in good company on FOAP’s upcoming album, Swan, out January 23rd from Meritorio and Melted Ice Cream.
