SML – “Taking Out The Trash”
One of my favorites from last year returns! L.A.’s SML knocked the collective consciousness off kilter with their debut, Small Medium Large, and they waste little time coming back to kick it in a different direction a few months later. The band’ leads off with the chemical burn of “Taking Out The Trash,” a rhythm-wracked track that’s got as much bite as anything on the debut. The band brings together some familiar names, especially to those who’ve been keeping watch on The Enfield Tennis Club, and the new album again features (bassist Anna Butterss, synthesist Jeremiah Chiu, saxophonist Josh Johnson, drummer Booker Stardrum, and guitarist Gregory Uhlmann), but this time takes the band deeper into the wilds. The debut was largely culled from one set of improvisations at the ETA with some additional work and overdubs. This time they take the same approach, but expand the sample set exponentally, culling from several shows over a 2024 tour. The single comes complete with a new video from Nespy5euro that pairs their percussive pummel with a flurry of animation. The new record, How You Been, is out November 7th from International Anthem.
