William Tyler – “Flight Final”

While he’s a summoner of the soft strings on most occasions, there’s certainly more to William Tyler than instrumental picker, and WT’s never been one to rest on expectations. Having scored films, ridden rough with The Impossible Truth, and found new psychedelic plateaus with Kieran Hebden, the last few years have found the songwriter embracing wide vistas. For his latest, Tyler unearths a cut that was cured in an environment of limitations. Crafted away from his usual recording rig, “Flight Final” finds Tyler blistering his landscapes with electronic interference and a penchant for minimalism. The cut pulses on a skittering beat, bending menacing tones with field recordings, pedal steel and a cosmic country heart. Like contemporary Daniel Bachman, Tyler turns the tables on the roots and ramble of his past, injecting a sense of exploration tinged with turbulence.
