Universal Light – “Triode > Freedom > Universal Blues”

Good news from some familiar names this week as Mike Gangloff (Pelt, The Black Twig Pickers), Kaily Schenker, and Jesse Sheppard (Elkhorn, The Heavy Lidders) announce a new album as Universal Light. The trio’s debut blends fiddle, cello, 12-string, and harmonium into weathered folk forms that skirt through bluegrass, classical, and trad folk territories. The cumulative talent on display is of the highest order and the group turn their years of string work into an astounding album that’s somber, saturated, and storm-torn. Phrases are tossed through circular motions and buffeted against winds with a tenebrous tone. The eponymous new record is out this week. Check out the harrowing, “Triode>Freedom>Universal Blues” and nab the short-run LP, limited to 100.
