Triptides – “Your Darkness”

Triptides slip back into rotation this week with a new album for Label 51 Recordings, known for latter day works from The Dream Syndicate and Rain Parade. The band hit on an Americana sheathed in soul sound for their last few outings at Curation and they continue to twist toward the latter on new single “Your Darkness.” Harnessing the same rhythmic ripple that drove Starlight, the band hangs the new single on ‘70s-saturated drums. New shades fill in the foreground, though, dipping into an ‘80s New Wave direction in the melodies, wrapping Tears for Fears and Modern English in a blanket of echo and a dose of proggy synths. The band’s best asset is their inability to stay still, constantly shifting sounds while remaining tethered to pulsing specters of the past. The new record, Shapeshifter, is out May 16th.
