thelightshines – The Dappled Light of Morning EP

The Hanging Stars have long been a favorite around here and they’ve already got a year-ender hanging on my favorites list, but the band’s tributaries have been busy as well. Alongside the excellent solo works of Richard Olsen and Joe Harvey-Whyte, current and former members of the band have revived works under thelightshines name, quietly slipping out an EP in March and following quickly with another one this month. The pair of EPs showcase a more sun-dappled and dreamy side of the players’ repertoire, with Sam Ferman (also of The See See) taking the lead here. Both EPs are worth exploring, but I’ve been a bit stuck in the breezy strums of The Dappled Light of Morning EP. The title track kicks things off, pastoral and cool before the band dips into a folk rivulet with ” (The Green Of) A Rapturous Dream.” The EP carries the listener into a carved hollow in the heart, a wooded wonderland hung with scents and strums. The accompanying EP, The Door To Your Room opens up into a more pop accompaniment, a more rapturous companion to the March EP’s cloistered aura. Both are available now and recommend for Hanging Stars fans and psych-pop heads alike.
