The Smashing Times – “Candy Bar”
Another perfect jangler out of Baltimore’s Smashing Times today. This time the band slows the pace for a late afternoon saunter through sublime territory. “Candy Bar” falls away from some of the band’s more sprightly fare to land as close to ‘60s folk as they’re set to tread on the upcoming Bloom. The song stretches with a rumpled clarity, shaking off the night’s decadence for a moment of resigned reflection. Those guitars ring right on through to the listener’s core, swaying with a hangdog hurt that’s bound to elicit more than a few resigned sighs. The band makes the slump sound good, a kind of necessary comedown that rights the ship when things get choppy. I feel like I could listen to this one all day long. The new album is out October 28th from Meritorio.
