The Croaks – “Grey Girl”

A hidden gem that was tipped to me from the good folks in Gold Dust, Boston’s The Croaks captivate with a combination of folk and pop. The band’s latest single, “Grey Girl,” pairs mandolin strums with defiant guitar swells, spectral flute, and the crush of drums. The whole thing is tied together with Anna Reidister’s soaring vocals. Lyrically, the cut dips back towards Anglican folk, but the band pushes past the Fairport touchstones for something that feels more akin to an aughts-era Drag City psych-folk treasure, caught between Meg Baird and White Magic. The new single is out now, with plenty to dig backwards into their catalog. Keep an eye on ‘em.
