The Ancients (Isaiah Collier, William Hooker, William Parker) – “2023-05-12 LA Set II”

After a few weeks out it’s nice to be back, and already with exciting news for 2025 on the horizon. First up, the always excellent Eremite has a new trio full of familiar names on deck. The Ancients brings together two cemented jazz icons with a new name, but one that’s already familiar around these parts. Jumping off a year-ender album with The Chosen Few, Isaiah Collier rounds out a trio with William Parker and William Hooker. The record brings together two LPs of improvised sets recorded at 2220 Arts & Archives in Los Angeles and at The Chapel in San Francisco. The band lets the listeners in with a 20+ minute piece from the LA run. The album opener hooks the listener nicely with liquid lava runs from Collier, keeping pace with the percussive and bass interplay of Hooker and Parker. The new record, The Ancients, is out January 31st from Eremite and Aguirre Records. The concerts and album also carry a production credit from the esteemed Black Editions Group.
